Overview

The Georgia Institute of Technology invites nominations and applications for the Directorship of The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design (“Building”), a state of the art teaching and learning community under development in the center of Georgia Tech’s campus. This nearly 40,000 gsf Living Building will be a meeting point and an incubator for advancing new ideas related to interdisciplinary thinking on sustainability. This project will be a cornerstone for progress in learning and awareness over the next ten years to rapidly accelerate progress in the Southeast’s regenerative, sustainable development movement. The Building will certify and operate under the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge standard.

Role and Organizational Relationships

The Director is charged with programmatic and operational oversight of the Building and its immediate environs, and will have ultimate responsibility for coordinating efforts to ensure the operation and certification of the Building under the Living Building Challenge 3.1 standards (https://living-future.org/lbc/basics/).

Reporting through the Office of the Executive Vice President for Administration and Finance, the Director will be supported through a matrix partnership with the Office of Campus Sustainability to enable administrative, event, and programmatic support of activities within the Building. The Director will work directly with the Operations and Maintenance Program Manager, who oversees building performance, systems and vendor management to ensure the building performs as required and meets LBC certification.

The Director will also have a dotted-line reporting relationship to the designated Faculty Engagement Lead appointed by Institute leadership. Together, they will develop and co-chair a Living Building Advisory Council to guide programming, courses and research focused on advancing the knowledge and awareness of sustainability in its broadest sense and regenerative design specifically within the community, region, and nation through the Building. The Director will develop key partnerships with campus units and organizations with roles and leadership in various aspects of sustainability, such as: Serve-Learn-Sustain, CEISMC, Colleges and Schools, Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business, Strategic Energy Institute, the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems, the Student Government Association, SGA Green Alliance, and sustainability-focused student organizations.

The position also requires “advanced knowledge of sustainability, demonstrated ability to design and deliver programming, and strong interpersonal and public speaking skills. Ability to work independently in a matrixed environment and develop partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.”
